Chess Camp
NEW THIS YEAR, CHESS MASTERS CONNECTIONS has partnered with St. Michael's to offer a unique opportunity to learn and begin mastering the game of chess. No matter what level you play, there is a place for you at our chess camp. We are thrilled to offer instruction from local International Chess Masters, such as Jorge Sammour-Hasbun who not only has experience teaching gifted children nationally for more than 13 years; but, a resume which includes the Child World Champion title and the 2007 and 2008 World Blitz Champion titles. Jorge and his partners are passionate about the game of chess and offer world-class chess instruction for the beginner to advanced player. Jorge states, "Chess camp will teach your child more than chess; your child will: increase logic and reasoning skills, improve decision making skills, develop problem solving skills, increase self confidence, develop analytical thinking skills, improve organizational habits and increase patience and persistence." Chess Masters Connections is committed to "teaching the fundamentals of chess and developing a clear connection to real life success."
Chess camp runs the first session this year, June 27th through July 1st. The fee for Chess Camp is $250.00. This camp is geared for children entering 1st through 8th grade. Your child will feel the passion and power of chess!

Pottery
Back by popular demand Pottery I and II! Our campers really enjoy getting their hands dirty creating unique pieces with clay; so this year we have extended Pottery II for our older, more experienced, clay fanatics. Have you ever "worked the wheel" or "thrown a pot"? Have you created a coiled container, a slab wall hanging or a pinch pot? Here is your chance. Artists also have the opportunity to glaze and fire their masterpieces.
Pottery II runs two weeks beginning July 5 through July 15, daily. The fee for our two-week session is $450.00. This camp is for children entering 4th through 8th grade.
Pottery I runs for one week beginning July 18 through July 22 and the fee is $250.00.
This camp is for children entering second and third grade.
The camp fee, for both sections, includes the cost of all materials.

Digital Photography
Do you love taking pictures? Campers will divide their time between photographing and importing pictures in order to enhance them with Adobe Photoshop. This camp uses computer technology to create individualized, frame-ready photos. You will learn to manipulate and combine photos to create that "once-in-a-lifetime" snapshot. Campers must provide their own digital camera, and USB cord, and be ready to explore some of Newport's finest sites. This program offers creative minds the freedom to explore their photographic interests.
Digital Photography runs July 18th through July 22nd and the fee for Digital Photography is $250.00. This camp is created for children entering 4th through 8th grade.

Knitting Camp
ALSO NEW THIS YEAR, KNITTING! Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? Perhaps you know how to knit, but maybe not purl? Perhaps you can cast-on, but not off? Perhaps you've made a scarf, but that really cute matching hat is something you have always wanted to try. Come learn the basics, plus a cable knit or two in our beginner to intermediate knitting class. Class size is limited to offer individualized instruction. You've admired those beautiful balls of yarn, now come see what you can do with them.
Knitting Camp runs July 25th through July 29th. The fee for the camp is $250.00 and includes all necessary needles, yarns and patterns. This camp is geared for children entering 3rd through 8th grade.

Lego Robotics Camp
Journey into St. Michael's Lego land. Your mission will be to complete ten objectives in the fast paced world of robotic programming. Each pair of campers, supplied with robotics kits, will master a variety of skills encouraged to challenge all levels. Come see what a moving experience robotic programming can be!
Lego Robotics camp runs August 1st through August 5th. The fee for Lego Robotics is $250.00. This camp is geared for children entering 4th through 8th grade.

Secondary School Admissions Test Preparation, a.k.a. SSAT Prep Camp
This last enrichment camp, which runs August 8th through August 12th offers the incoming seventh and eighth grade student that jump-start in thinking about, and preparing for, the international SSAT. The SSAT is divided into five timed sections: two quantitative, two verbal and a writing sample. We will have ample time daily to concentrate on instruction and practice tests. Highlights of instruction will include: specific SSAT test taking strategies, math review, vocabulary building, synonym and analogy review, and reading comprehension. This is a concentrated class focusing on instruction necessary for successful test taking skills. The upside is that it is during the student's summer break and they will have ample time to put their newly acquired instruction to practice. The international SSAT is offered eight times nationally, and five times internationally during each calendar year. Students are allowed to take the test as many times as they like. The first test following our camp will be offered in October 2011. The fee for the SSAT Prep Camp is $250.00 and includes all instructional materials.
