Theatre at St. Michael's - programs & activities
Movie Production
June 27 - July 8
(2 weeks) no camp July 4th
Movie Screening July 8
Our exciting two-week session offers campers the opportunity to write their own feature film and produce it from start to finish. With experienced professional guidance, campers will collaborate to write an original script, compose a storyboard, and design their production. They will then act, film, and edit their original motion picture. Participants will receive professional instruction in scriptwriting, acting for video, and videography, and will have access to costumes, props and set pieces in our theatre. Campers will also have personal use of our state of the art video and editing equipment. Digital camcorders allow the young filmmakers to upload their footage into digital editing software, where they experience the editing process firsthand. Campers may choose to focus on acting or directing (behind the camera!), but all campers are encouraged to try their hand at all aspects of the production. On the final day of camp, we will hold a world-premiere screening of the original motion picture at the Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center.

Teen Shakespeare Intensive "A Comedy of Errors"
July 5 - July 15
(2 weeks) no camp July 4th
Performances July 15 and 16
Theatre at St. Michael's continues its advanced Shakespeare workshop for experienced actors. Under the direction of camp director Christina Johnston, a limited number of teens will undertake intensive study and production of Shakespeare's slapstick farce, a play in which multi-layered mistaken identities eventually come full circle to happily ever after. The small number of actors in this program ensures a high level of personal interaction with our camp staff. Participants will be involved in all aspects of rehearsal and full production - including training in the craft of acting, character development, text analysis, stage combat, choreography, and special effects.

Musical Production
July 11 - July 29
(3 weeks)
Performances July 29 and July 30
Calling all stars! All singers and dancers! This workshop allows students to act in a full-scale Broadway-style musical of their very own! Students work with the faculty to create their own story and characters, write scenes, lyrics, and musical themes of songs. Songs based on student input are composed by a professional composer. Once the writing is done, the rehearsals begin. The young actors work with the director, voice coach, and choreographer to put together the show. When all the pieces come together, the result will be a weekend of world-premiere performances.

Shakespeare Production - "The Winter's Tale"
August 1 - August 12
(2 weeks)
Performances August 12 and 13
"The Winter's Tale" is one of Shakespeare's most captivating romances, combining fierce jealousy and imagined betrayal with comic festivals and magical reconciliation, and of course, that most famous stage direction, "exit, pursued by a bear"! Under experienced guidance, students will study the language, create the characters, and bring to life the royal courtiers and frolicking shepherds of this enthralling play. Actors will be auditioned for their roles, and all actors will be cast. For those actors with less experience, instruction in basic acting, character development, and theatre games are offered to develop their skills. Elements such as choreography and/or stage combat are introduced as necessary for the final production. Performances will take place the final weekend for an audience of the public, family, and friends.
